Help Support The Red Bird Mission - Save "School Labels for Education"

As you enjoy all those good "comfort foods" of winter, such as soup, please keep in mind the soup can labels for our new mission project. This year we will be collecting Cambells' soup and other product labels, along with labels from Swanson broths, Pepperidge Farm products, Franco-American, V8 juices, Prego pasta sauce and Pace products. We will also be collecting General Mills Box Tops for Education, which is found on a variety General Mills cereals and other products.

All of the labels will be sent to the Red Bird Mission in Beverly, Kentucky. Through the Campbells' Soup Co.'s "Labels for Education" and the General Mills' "Box Tops for Education" programs, Red Bird Mission is able to exchange the labels for much-needed equipment and supplies that help support its ministries.

What is the Red Bird Mission?

This is an institution in the Red Bird Missionary Conference and is comprised of Red Bird Mission, Inc. and Red Bird Clinic, Inc., two national mission institutions related to the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church.

Since 1921, Red Bird Mission in Beverly, KY, has helped meet the spiritual, educational and health needs of those living in the southeastern part of the state. More than half of the adults in the mission do not have a high school education, and 50% of the labor force is unemployed, according to Brian Barker, director of the mission giving for Red Bird Mission. "The labels allow us to buy items we wrould otherwise not be able to afford; and (the program) frees us to use financial donations for community outreach, such as food, clothing or shelter," says Baker.

A box for your labels will be located on the table in the Sun Room hallway. A complete list of eligible product labels will also be available for you, next to the collection box. This project will be starting February 22nd.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN'S MISSION PROJECT - Children of Iraq

Everyone in the congregation is invited to help. We will be creating "Gift of the Heart" health kits, which will be sent to Iraq to help meet the day-to-day hygiene needs of the Iraqi children. In Iraq right now, simple health and hygiene items are in short supply and children always are the most vulnerable in these situations. As part of the "All Our Children" commitment, Church World Service and its partners are trying to help meet these urgent needs.

We will have one-gallon zip-lock bags in the Sun Room hallway for you to "adopt." Included is the specific items needed for each bag and directions. We will be collecting /gathering the health kits until April ll, (Easter Sunday). We appreciate your help with this critical need. If you have any questions, contact Sue Esche.

The Heifer Project

Our Sunday School students and youth made a commitment in Jan. 2003 to set aside a portion of their allowances as their "tithe" to help others in need. They chose the Heifer Project as their mission.

Their collection totaled $614.22, enough to buy 2 goats, 2 sheep, a trio of rabbits, two flocks of chickens and one flock of ducks or geese. These gifts will be distributed by Heifer International to familes who use these animals to generate income for their day to day needs. What a wonderful gift our Sunday School children and youth have given.

See Mrs. Norma Arons to learn how your family can help.

More information about the mission is available on the Heifer International Web site.

   Operation Christmas Child - 2003

Thank you to all who participated in Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, the Christian relief and evangelism ministry led by Franklin Graham. We were able to participate in this mission which sends shoeboxes filled with goodies and Gospel messages in their native language to children all over the world through the contributions of church families and the Sunday School students.
